Makir Volcy
Founder & CEO at NRG Bloom
Makir Volcy is the Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of NRG Bloom, a Canadian energy-technology company that transforms stranded flare gas into low-carbon Bitcoin hash power across West Africa. Under his leadership, NRG Bloom has deployed the region’s first 500 kW flare-gas-powered mining site in Bayelsa State, Nigeria. The operation monetises stranded natural-gas while delivering reliable off-grid power and skilled employment to local communities.
Makir entered the digital-asset arena in 2017 as a proprietary trader before moving into institutional market-making and liquidity provision. He later joined the market-risk division at Binance, the world’s largest exchange, gaining deep insight into exchange-side surveillance, compliance, and treasury management. These experiences, combined with running his own hydro-backed Bitcoin mine in Quebec, convinced him that the greatest untapped alpha lies at the intersection of energy infrastructure and Bitcoin’s open monetary protocol.
Since founding NRG Bloom, Makir has raised capital from a mix of North-American and African investors, secured flare-gas offtake agreements, and assembled a multidisciplinary team of engineers and traders. The company now designs modular containerized data centers that can be dropped into remote oil-fields or renewables projects, helping operators monetize by-product gas while reducing methane emissions.
Makir is based in Toronto but spends significant time on-site in Nigeria. He is a frequent commentator on Bitcoin mining, flare-gas monetization, and Africa’s role in the global energy transition, sharing insights via his NRGtoBTC newsletter and conference keynotes.
