Carel is a long-time proponent for the potential of Bitcoin as money in South Africa, advocating for the need to liquidity and merchant tools since 2011. He has built a fully functional Bitcoin wallet deployed to a major South African bank and co-founded the first Bitcoin exchange in South Africa, Luno. Currently he is working on merchant tools for Bitcoin acceptance as founder and CEO of MoneyBadger. In 2023, MoneyBadger added Bitcoin payments to a major South African retailer, Pick n Pay, currently processing over R1,000,000 in transactions per month.
